Close Ecounters of the Nerd Kind

Image
Back in my drinking days, HEAVY drinking days, I frequented local bars and played lots of darts. A buddy of mine used to always say " Nice weathering!" which, according to him, meant that I was doing a good job of going after all of the targets and not wasting time on one specific. It occurred to me that that's kind of how I've been collecting. Mixing it up while not fixating on one collectible or another. Action figures are still high priority  but thanks to Matt from ToyBox I've also been exploring the world of comics alot more lately. Other days I'm online looking for cool singles to pad my sportscard collection. What can I say,  It's the price I pay for being a member of the nerdy kind 🤓 Here's a look at a few of my recent additions!  I love Dormammu's design! He gives off strong Jack Kirby vibes!  Thanks to ToyBox for sending me these two issues of the incredible Hulk!  Red Circle comics/Archie comics  are ...

Just a couple of comics... ...and this amazing poster😍

Archie/Red Circle Comics - Mighty Crusaders #1 (1982)

Image
Let me start this off by establishing the fact that I am a lazy as hell reviewer. I'll be the first to admit it. I'd much rather just post a couple of  pics with a few footnotes here and there and call it a day. However, I would almost always prefer to do an action figure review over a comic book review. With comics I never really know what pages to snap pics of or the importance of the creators/ writers/artists. Also, I don't want to spoil it for anyone who decides to go out and get a copy for themselves. So please bear with me.   As far as Mighty Crusaders issue  #1 goes... fucking loved it!  Look at that cover! Alot of times comics show all types of action on the cover and shit doesn't pop off until 7 or 8 pages into the book. Not here. If you want an even better idea of what your about to get into just flip the comic over and look at the back. Top notch art. Non-stop action. Lots of well written dialogue.  ...

Wonder Man Comic Lot!

Image
I recently received my package containing 17  issues of  Wonder Man 1991 -94!This was a series I wanted to get into as a kid but only managed to  pick up the two titles you see below.I don't know what happened.I must have lost interest.I do remember really loving the character.Wonder Man came off as being kind of  aloof  and arrogant In the comics,some-timing as a Hollywood actor. He was kind of a lone wolf and that was something I gravitated towards when It came to comic book heroes and villains that appealed to me.I can't wait to read through these again and give you guys a little more insight into one of Marvels', IMO,most underrated heroes. X-Force Issue #1

Image
My childhood comic book collection consisted mostly of  cool looking covers or just issues and story arcs that I thoroughly enjoyed reading.I wasn't hip to the creators of the content.I mean ,I knew there were different artists and writers but I never based my comic purchases on any one name In the business. If It was a Marvel book,I was gonna give It a try, regardless of who inked or lettered the comic. Also ,any superhero team that started with the letter "X " was a must read for me.I was super excited when I first found out about about X-Force.My thinking was ,this was going to be X-Men all over again, but with new characters! And when I finally saw the first issue on my LCS  shelves,I instantly fell In love with the cover! It was larger than life ,with an imposing Cable on the front and an equally insane looking character (Shatterstar) on the back holding twin Katanas! I must admit to not being able to remember the story as It was years ago when I last read it.I'm al...

The Punisher War Journal Issue #1

Image
It must have been summer of 1989  when I picked this one up, as a 12 year old, while visiting my moms side of the family In Manhattan,NY. I remember It clearly. My mom, sister and I walking through a crowded Delancey St. In search of a clothing store for my sister.Me?I didn't want no stinkin' clothes.I wanted comics! And It turns out magazine news stands outnumbered clothing stores 20 to 1 on that particular strip so I got to get my shopping on first!I can remember my sister throwing a fit about It,calling me a spoiled brat under her breath ,lol! She was right, though ;) As we crossed the busy street, approaching  the newsstand ,I could see It!There It was!A first issue Punisher mag with issues 2 and 3 right behind It!I scooped up all three along with a few other miscellaneous titles.    The amount of nostalgia swirling around my head right now , as I type this , Is off the charts!Punisher War Journal was one of my most immersive comic book experiences.Ever! An expe...

Re-Collecting My Childhood Comics!

Image
In the 80's ,X-Men Classic,or Classic X-Men ,whichever one you prefer, were a great series of comic books. As a kid I had a few stragglers ,you know ,late issues In my collection but I could never find that elusive number 1.So when Jim Lee dropped X-Men #1, In 1991 , I was all In.I was finally going to be  able to follow an X-Men story arc from the very beginning!Ya see, comic books was our Netflix.Only we had to wait a full month before we could get our hands on the next episode. And even after that month long wait,It wasn't a sure thing that your local comic shop would have any In stock.Still, there was nothing more exhilarating than walking into a  shop and finding that new release!Right away, X- Men became life.I had other comics In my collection.West Coast Avengers,Captain America,Spider-Man but nothing ever came close to my collection of  Jim Lee X-Men comic books.Today,I am one step closer to obtaining all of the Jim Lee X-Men comics I had as a kid. There's lots more to...

Comic Rack Reboot

Image
Ever since my  curbside comic rack find  ,I've found myself looking more and more into comic book collecting. It's a facet of the hobby I've shied away from because of the increase In price of a single book. Now that I have this comic rack ,I've found myself looking for that quick comic book fix In those discount multi-packs of vintage ,out of print, books. These ,however, have yet to relinquish anything  I had as a kid. It's not even hit or miss.In fact,up to this point It's been strictly misses. In an effort to rectify the problem,I've decided to just go after titles I had growing up.The comics that really meant something to me.I mean, quality over quantity right?I'd rather recoup  one title I owned as a kid as opposed to acquiring 20 comics that I probably wouldn't have batted an eye at as a kid or even now as an adult. Every time I get these new collecting urges I like to do a little preparation. You know , small things to amp me  up about a new endeavor....

So,My Local Grocery Store Now Sells Comics!

Image
$5.99 for 4 comics!I'll take It considering that Is what one comic book goes for nowadays.Lets crack this baby open and see what we got!  A 1985 copy of The Uncanny X-Men issue # 196.A lackluster cover and from the few pages I've already flipped through,It seems to be light on action ,too. The best thing this comic has going for It Is the mentioning of  Secret Wars 2  on the corner of the cover.Anything referencing Secret Wars 1 or 2 Is a winner In my book! 1985 Marvel  # 196 The Uncanny X-Men Gambit  And The X-Ternals. A 1995 Deluxe Issue #1 of a superhero team I never new existed. From what I can tell It consists of Gambit,Strong Guy,Jubilee and I'm not so sure who the other two might be.I'm gonna take a guess and say Polaris and a souped up version of Warpath.I'm pretty sure I'm wrong on all but two ,Gambit and Jubilee.A promising looking cover ,nonetheless, and a number 1 issue ,so that's always nice. 1995 Marvel #1 Gambit And The X-Te...

Sometimes,The Hobby Gods Listen

Image
I have been wanting a proper place to display my small collection of comic books, like, forever!I remember how great It was ,walking into those hobby/comic book shops and flipping  through the comics on those spinning  racks.I've always wanted one of those for my toy room. You know,to give It that hobby shop feeling.Well, today ,while on the way to the grocery store I saw this beauty standing on the curb along with a cat scratching post and some other junk.It almost looked as If the rack was attached to the cat post,so from a distance I thought nothing of it.I got back home to get the dogs ready for a walk ,and on my stroll around the block I couldn't stop thinking about the rack.I had to go back and give It a second look.I'm glad I did! It's not the spinning rack.Hell I'm not even sure If It's even for comic books ,but It works!I've looked up similar racks like this on Ebay and they go for upwards of  $300!So,again,If you guys have any idea what this mig...

When Nature Calls...

It's nice to have a little something to look at while taking care of your business.Don't like making the trek out to your local comic shop? Are hobby shops a little too dark and dank for your tastes?Don't worry ,Dollar Tree has you covered.Unless you live out in the sticks ,there should be a Dollar Tree right around the corner form you. While I don't recommend their toilet paper, they do carry something that will come In handy on your next trip to the john.$1 comic packs! It used to be three so-so comics for a buck but now you get one quality book and some trading cards.I managed to find an Infinity Gauntlet issue # 3 on one occasion and a couple of days ago ,I found this!                                                        AHHHH...Smells like early 80's! I never knew Hercules had his own series of comic books. And how cool Is this,I got ...
