Marvel Superheroes - Hulk (ToyBiz 1990)

The 70's had It's fair share of Hulk action figures. From Pocket Heroes to Die cast articulated figures and of course the famous 12 " Mego dolls. The 80's not so much. How cool would It have been to own a Mattel Secret Wars Hulk action figure!Well, we shall never know. In 1990, ToyBiz ,a toy company affiliated with Marvel Entertainment and based out of  super hero haven, NY city , took on the task of releasing a line of Marvel action figures! If you were a casual fan you probably didn't mind the myriad of  gimmicks that were given to the first few waves of figures. I didn't care for the gimmicks   much but  was excited to see Marvel action figures being produced again.

With the Hulk figure ,his gimmick  wasn't so much  "smash" as It was " bend".The bent pipe accessory is very malleable .Place the pipe in each hand and by pulling a  draw string on Hulks back,he  brings his arms up and In,kind of like the butterfly weightlifting technique,to give off the bending effect. I would have shown a video but I hate using features like this on older figures for fear of breakage.  Oh,and he also comes with a boulder made of a soft and hollow plastic.I guess It would have been cool to use In an epic mountainside battle.

Gimmick aside,he looks great.I love the bright green and that head sculpt Is a throwback, once again,to those older 70's figures.

Two down,a few more(Captain America,Dr.Doom,Thor,Dr.Octopus) to go.

Wow!What a difference 28 years makes! And I still like the head sculpt  on the ToyBiz figure better than the MU Hulk .

They say good looks skip a generation."They" might be on to something.

As of now, this Is what my 90's Marvel ToyBiz display looks like. I still want more X-Men and will definitely be adding more  mint-esh  Marvel Superheroes ,too.

    1. They certainly had appeal. And they released so many different characters. The figures got more sophisticated and less about gimmicks towards the tail end of their run but I think these will be the most memorable.

  4. I remember being super impressed with this guy when he came out because before him all we had was the pocket hero this size and he was a sad Hulk. To this the original Toybiz Thor is my favorite version of Thor and I guess there are actually a good number of these old figures that so far are still the best version of some figures.

    1. That Thor was quite the stretch, though lol.I like him too but I think what does it for me ,much like the rest of the figures in this line, are the bright colors they went with. All the figures look like they came right out of a cartoon or a Jack Kirby comic.

  6. You should start with a Titans Hulk. The real big ones you see everywhere.12 inch I think.Other notable mentions are -

    Marvel Universe Series 4 Hulk

Marvel Legends or Select (many to choose from)

Vintage Mego 12" or Die Cast (very pricey)

    1. Just found the Titans Hulk online. They're very reasonably priced. I think I'm gonna save up and try to buy the Marvel Legends 14.5" figure though. Love the detail and box design. The only problem is I might be tempted to keep it in the box, since the packaging is attractive as well.
