Taking A Break From Blogger

Lately,It seems like the toy blogging community has been dwindling. And while this small circle has  led to good  standings with fellow bloggers ,It has also, subsequently led to sporadic cases of cabin fever. It got to a point where I actually thought Brothermidnight was targeting me over selling some of the items he had traded away to me on ebay.Which got me wondering If my ebay page was being stalked or If I was just being paranoid ,as I had sold a few things that he had given to me by way of trade ,not to flip or make a profit ,but to simply fortify my collection. Some of the stuff he had sent me I even showed to Toy Box to see If he was interested and when he declined I put It on Ebay ,sold It and bought more toys.I'd like to apologize to you ,Brother,If that In any way offended you or If that offends anyone else in the toy collecting community.I ,honestly, could care less what people   do with the things I send them because after all ,they belong to them now.Long as I get my end of the bargain.I'm  certainly not gonna be keeping tabs on any and everyone I trade with just to make sure they are not selling my ,I mean their shit.I was never one to follow any "code of honor " and always preferred to do things the way I want to do things. That is still the case.Im not a Ninja.Ultimately ,things have just gotten a little weird   ,even by virtual standards, and I think It's time to get back to the real world .For a little while at least.

R.I.P.

Remember When Toys Were Actually Cool?!?

O.K. maybe the word "cool" isn't cool anymore but In the eighties, toys sure were!Which got me thinking.Should the 80's be labeled as "The Golden Age" of toys ?Try to be as unbiased as you possibly can when you answer this question.I think the 70's could duke It out all day with the 80's In a match for toy supremacy. The 90's had some o.k. stuff  but come up short imo.The 2000's brought us a ton of cool shit ,too, but that's kind of expected when you factor in technology and resource material, again, ,all thanks to  the 70's and 80's.Most of what Is out now Is rehashed from toy greatness of the past.So It's the 70's vs. the 80's.Who wins?

Meet The Players

I could have done this on my near defunct sports blog but everyone over there knows who these guys are. Most in toy collecting circles don't,so consider this a crash course.80's Baseball Greatness 101.What i'm gonna do for these installments Is let the highlights speak for themselves.First up..

It's That Time Again,The Thumbnail Says It All

Yes my friends, more Starting Lineups.I could literally eat a bowl of these fucking things with milk ,I'm so hooked on them right now.New arrivals include Mark McGwire and Carney Lansford. For those of you that didn't know (I think Fuji knows, not sure) ,I was a huge Oakland A's fan growing up.The Mets were my favorite N.L. team but overall I was an A's fan. That all changed when they decided to trade Canseco but that's a whole 'nother subject. Still, even today I could name pretty much everybody on that  mid to late 80's squad including bench players. You guys probably know who Mark McGwire Is already but Lansford might be new to you.Carney Lansford was the A's third basemen and primarily batted second In the lineup ,after Rickey Henderson. He  had one of the more intense batting stances In the game.Fidgety might be the best way to describe It.Lots of line drives down the third base line, the occasional homer and crazy glove work ,just a fun player to watch. His Starting Lineup figure would have never showed up around my parts as he was more of a regional release. Its nice to be able to add him to the collection. Also, according to the checklist ,I think I've completed my 1988 A's team.I thought I still needed Mike Davis but I think that was an unreleased figure.I might still go after some 89 A's just fill up the roster a bit.Maybe go after Stewart,D. Henderson  and Weiss. We shall see.

I was planning on opening McGwire after seeing the card damaged on the sellers ebay item pic ,but after holding It In hand, the cardback is In pretty solid shape.Save for the tear  at the top,all else Is pretty crisp.I know this would bug the hell out of pristine collectors, but not me.I can live with it.

This is my revamped SL display.I'm limiting myself  ,purposely, to this one little shelving unit.I really don't have any more room for carded figures.I could probably fit two more carded figs on here and the rest will have to be loose fillers.

The A's display is a little bland.I'm definitely gonna have to go after some of the 89 figs.

In order to make space for Lansford and McGwire I had to take my Howard Johnson out of the packaging and display him on the center shelf with all the other Mets figures. Now I have an extra cardback to check figures off as I go.

Some A's highlights from the 89 WS.

                                           UPDATE

It looks like they released a Dave Parker figure in 88 wearing an A's uni but with a baseball card wearing a Reds uniform. While he is not officially listed on the cardback as part of the A's ,it's still a must add. He'll make up for the lack of a Mike Davis figure.

Hypothetical

It's early 80's,and your mom decides she wants to reward you for all the hard work she thinks you've been doing in school, and takes you down to the nearest Toys R Us.There's a catch. She's being very meticulous about the figures she wants you to pick out. They have to be of the 3 3/4 variety and of the same brand/universe.She wants to teach you a lesson about the real world because, according to her, In the real world G.I. Joe doesn't mix with Star Wars.He-Man doesn't get down with Captain Power and Marvel Is better than DC so you definitely don't want to integrate those two universes. That's when you realize your mom's not playing with a full deck but that's besides the point. There are far more serious matters to attend. The ball's In your court now.In front of you  are rows and rows of  ....

He-Man
Secret Wars
Kenner DC Super Powers
G.I. Joe
Star Wars (leftover stragglers on clearance)
Captain Power
and D&D .

What do you go for and why?

New Room Set Up

As you can see I've streamlined a bit. Stashed a few things and some stuff I've just gotten rid of  or sold on eBay. But for the most part It's the same crap you've seen here in the past.

Check out the lids ! Never to old for a hat collection.I have 5 now.Anyone else rock snapbacks? That Marvel pic in the back is a drawing my oldest drew/painted for me In her art class.Pretty damn nifty,I think.

To Be A Winner....ok I'll stop now.

Mostly 90's stuff on the top shelf .Some late 80's.Again,I don't go out of my way to collect every toy that released back in the days. What you'll see on my displays consists mostly of stuff I used to have as a kid. The middle shelf Is straight 80's.

Doing my best Brother Midnight impersonation here with my 5.5 fig display ;) Lion O stands out like a soar thumb, though lol.

I gotta get more Sectaurs.Poor Skito has been rolling solo for too long.No Toxcid and he doesn't even have his web gear. So,so sad :(

Starting Lineup Collection (so far)

This is what I'm working with so far. My most recent pick ups are Mike Schmidt,Roger Clemens and the rest of the Mets players that I needed to complete the team set, some loose and some carded. 1988 was a great year for baseball. You could argue that alot of the guys were juiced up but so were the pitchers. And even more remarkable were the pitchers who weren't juicing that still managed to put up great numbers against some of baseballs most herculean hitters.

And yet another great Starting Lineup commercial ...

Testing Posting From My Phone

Can you guys let me know how this looks on your PCs?I've been kicked out of my room thanks to Zumba and I dont have access to my personal cpu.Hence the phone test.Fisto will be my Guinea pig for this Blogger phone experiment.

Please Excuse The Lack Of Posts

Please excuse my lack of participation ,my fellow blogger pals,as I've been a little out of whack mentally these last couple of weeks.Dealing with a loss in the family and a spew of other things really has me In the dumps.I didn't want to post anything during this time just for the sake of posting. Didn't want to force it.Sometimes It just seems  no amount of action figure magic can pull you out of the depths of  depression.I've resorted to playing my guitar ,ALOT, and singing lots of very sad songs ,lol. That seems to help me get It all out sometimes.I do have lots to be thankful for ,though, and I will never take that for granted.I decided to try and get into the X-Mas spirit early If you couldn't tell already by my background.Yeah, that's Santa on the left there.I do have more Starting Lineup goodness on the way.I don't know what It Is but lately I've been In 80's MLB mode.Sucks for you guys ,I know lol.So stay tuned, peeps,be back soon ;)

To Be A Winner ...

To Be A Winner...

I seriously can't get the damn theme song out of my head. For the last week or so It's been on replay. I've found myself scouring ,these last couple of days, for 1988 Starting Lineup figures, loose or MOC.I think It's the fact that alot of these figures just weren't available to me as a kid due to them being sold based on team location. For instance,I grew up In Upstate NY so we got tons of Mets and Yankees players. I think this would change in later years as I remember a lot of  other teams being readily available and on the pegs from 1989 and on.

You know you're in trouble when you start marking figures off on a checklist. This was done with paint on the cpu ,I didn't want to write on the card backs. It's a little hard to see but the ones I currently own have the box next to them filled In.As you can see I have a looong way to go.

Here are my newest acquisitions.

From Left to Right - Ozzie Smith,Ozzie Guillen(just realized that they're both shortstops and named Ozzie),Eddie Murray,Wally Joyner, ,Rickey Henderson

My favorite of this bunch Is Ozzie Guillen. Firstly ,because  it's Ozzie Guillen.I have an Oziie Guillen action figure. How cool Is that?!?Plus ,the uni with the player number on the pants.Classic! Not to mention the face Is pretty spot on.It was hit or miss with these figures In '88 with alot of guys getting the same head sculpt.Guillen's was on point.Check out

Here's Guillen's 1986 Topps RC.Not from my personal stash ,I was too lazy to dig it out and snap a pic. Here's the link for the pic below

More SLU goodness on the way!!!!

My New Obsession!

Before I start gushing over childhood Kenner Starting Lineup memories, give this video  a click. Is It not the most 80's sounding thing ever!?!This could have easily been a G.I. Joe theme song.

Isn't It great! In fact ,all of their commercials were pretty damn epic. And now,on to the post...

Kenner 1988 Starting Lineup MOC /1990 Bo Jackson Loose

The first line of Kenner Starting Lineups came out In 1988.At that time,I was still into G.I. Joe but transitioning into baseball fandom.Baseball was kind of Ideal for me as I was able to watch real, live heroes play out in front of me on my television screen. Each with their own super power! Jose Canseco(my favorite player at the time)  could hit a baseball a country mile. Bo Jackson had a cannon for an arm and guys like Dwight Gooden and Nolan Ryan were masters of deception, every time they went out on the mound and racked up strikeouts.I was already into action figures so In my world ,the stars had definitely aligned when these figures came out.A very belated thank you to Kenner ;)The truth Is,I liked these figures a little too much.Yeah, the next part of this story involves things I did to obtain them that I'm not particularly proud of.I was young and impressionable, and when an older friend of mine told me that all you had to do was remove them from the packaging and walk out of the store with them, undetected,I was In.I know, not cool.I don't put the blame on him as I was old enough to make the right decision and chose not to. My collection grew ten fold. One day ,my cousin and I got greedy and went back to the  same store multiple times and that's when they busted us.I had Joe Dimaggio In my coat pocket and my cousin had a hooded sweater on, filled with Tiger handheld games ,lol. I shouldn't be laughing , but looking back on It now I find It somewhat comical. If there are any kids reading this ,please don't try this at home. It's not cool to steal, from anyone or anywhere at anytime.Earn your shit ;)

I got It bad  from my parents .And then one day ,while playing at a friends house ,his phone rang.He picked It up and said It was my dad on the phone. My dad was  kind of excited on the other line as he went on to tell me how he had found a bunch of  those Starting Lineup figures I liked so much on clearance. He picked up 5 figures for me and wanted me to come home to check them out.Poor dad had an eye for sales but certainly not for baseball players :( Most of the figures were commons .I seem to remember alot of Cleveland Indians being In that mix.Pat Tabler,Mel Hall.Anyways, you gotta love and admire the man for trying.I certainly didn't deserve them.

So here's the back of the packaging. As you can see I'll be in over my head If I try to go after every last one of these figures. I'm mainly going to be picking up personal favorites and ones I had a kid. Some will be loose ,some in packaging.

If you haven't gotten a good look at these before, check out  Bo Jackson. He was one of the few to have a player accurate head sculpt. This is probably because this figure Is from 1990 I believe. The earlier run of figures were pretty generic looking.

So ,yeah, shameful memories aside,I'm pretty obsessed with these figures right now.I'm trying to pick up as many of the first run MOC as most are pretty cheap these days. Some of the more expensive ones I'll probably pick up loose and spend less.Well.that's all for today kids, and  remember "To be a winner ,be strong and ready to fight......and don't shoplift!"  ;)

Stand Down!

The early bird gets the worm, and Zartan's early presence gives him the upper hand and dibs on the sleeping Manhunters. He convinces the Justice League and paints the Joes as a sneaky,no good, underground affiliation  with bad intentions.Especially the one dressed In black and armed to the teeth.Supes and co. get in between Duke and Snake Eyes while Zartan makes a clean get away. The Joes wisely step aside ,fearing a confrontation with the likes of a super powered team like the Justice League ,but manage to discreetly launch a  reconnaissance drone to track Zartan's whereabouts.

More ToyBiz Love

My plans to strictly stick to MOC Marvel ToyBiz  Superheroes figures flew right out the window. With this Captain America going for well over what I was willing to pay for It new,a loose ,semi mint figure ran me a few bucks. He's incomplete ,missing his shield launcher but I'm good with that. His paint Is still pretty much flawless with the exception of the "A"on his cowl.

Here's what I'm working with ,so far.

I also have this ToyBiz Human Torch figure that's been hanging around my collection ,collecting dust.I might just go after the F4 figures, too. They are pretty affordable and the Thing looks cool as heck.We shall see.
